Active Birth Antenatal Weekend Course

An active birth is one that uses movement, gravity and enhanced knowledge of the body's physiology to create the optimal experience for the new family during the birth process and beyond. An active birth can take place in a variety of settings by using informed choices and ensuring the mother, her wishes and her body are respected and prioritised.

Local doulas Simi Shah and Vaida Milne-Tyte are offering active birth preparatory workshops for parents expecting in 2022! This experience which is tailored for a small group is offered in two formats: weekend and short course. The courses draw from a wide variety of perspectives including Active Birth, Yoga Birth and Hypnobirthing as well as many years’ experience that Simi and Vaida have gained while attending births as doulas. Their teaching is evidence-based to give you a well-rounded and realistic understanding of what to expect at the birth of your baby. You will leave the course ready to meet your arrival feeling calm confident in your own strength and excited for the transition into parenthood.

The weekend course is ideal for first time parents and those who wish to concentrate on practical exercises of movement, breath and other comfort measures; your rights and choices at a birthplace; physiology and labour and birth and all the “what if’s”.

Topics covered:

  • Benefits of active birth
  • Anatomy of the baby's passage by stage of labour
  • Understanding your body & emotions during labour and birth
  • Creating an optimal birthing environment
  • Labouring & birthing positions including water birth
  • Pain perception and options for its management
  • Your rights and options during birth
  • Birth, bonding & the placenta
  • How to be a confident and helpful birth partner
  • Trusting your body, and reducing the likelihood of intervention
  • Making well informed decisions
  • Applying Active Birth principles in combination with medical support
  • Practical preparations for birth and welcoming the newborn
  • Feeding your baby
  • Extended Q & A with no stone unturned!

Great job Brookfield Primary School for raising £6000, to update their library with books that truly reflect the diversity of our community!

A massive shout out to The Brookfield Community (formerly the PTA), particularly Anella Wickenden, as well as @breathewithkerry and @christelassb who donated all their income from their recent Breath Workshop.

Very happy that Moon Women's Health was also able to contribute in a small way to this achievement.

☀️ If you're around today, make your way down to the Brookfield Summer Fair - 12pm to 3pm. They'll be amazing food and fun for the kids ☀️

A big 30c welcome to Hannah Mayall. Hannah joined the Moon collective several months ago, bringing with her a rejuvenating Monday morning Vinyasa Yoga – a perfect way to start the week – find out more in our bio.

Over to Hannah 👇

Hi, I’m Hannah.

I’m a gardener, a creator of bobbly hedges (check out the house on the corner of Laurier and Dartmouth Park Avenue), a yoga practitioner and a yoga teacher.

I have lived and worked in the streets around Moon most of my life and feel committed to this community.

I have brought up 4 children, supporting and attending the local schools and during the years of work and parenthood I have always had some form of mind/body practice, which has supported me through the various phases of my life. In the last 20+ years this has been yoga.

Now I am older, wiser, calmer and even more rooted here than ever I can really see the value of a habitual practice especially when shared with members of my community.

I am very pleased to be here at Moon on Monday mornings offering a Vinyasa flow style yoga class with an emphasis on sun salutations and breath led movement.

I have also recently started a session on Wednesdays at the newly opened Highgate Newtown Community Centre - @hncp_2025

I hope to share some of the faith I have built in yoga practice in an effort to give back and invite more people to find a moment of peace, stability and introspection in their day which has got to be a good thing in our hectic world.

My classes are open to all abilities BUT I especially want to invite those who feel they are too old or too unfit or in some way unable to bend… yoga is an internal and individual practice and not all about creating great shapes

(I have recently qualified as a breath work teacher ((but more of that anon!))

A couple of helpers to mount the latest beautiful artwork that we're fortunate enough to host at Moon.

As the warm weather invites us to swim in the lakes, rivers and sea you might want to keep an eye out for mermaids.

There are none on the Heath, although I might have felt something tickle my toes in the Ladies' Pond recently, but that didn’t stop me asking local artist Jen Cable to lend us this piece, inspired by the tale of the little mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen.

Unlike the tale of Ariel in the Disney film, the original story is a warning about the importance of keeping your voice and using it to create the kind of inclusive and supportive society in which we can all be valued.

It felt fitting that Moon should host the piece for the coming weeks.

You can read more about Jen's work, and the relevance of the tale to women today in Jen’s blog post entitled ‘Hold your Tongue’ - find the link in our bio.
